Your Business Info Doesn’t Match Across the Internet — And Google Notices

Do a quick test: search your business name and scroll past your own website. Somewhere out there is a directory with your old phone number, a Yelp page showing your last location, or a Facebook page you set up years ago and forgot. To you, those are stale leftovers. To Google, they’re conflicting reports about who you are — and every conflict makes it a little less confident about sending customers your way.

Why one wrong phone number matters more than you’d think

Google builds its picture of your business by cross-checking your name, address, and phone number everywhere they appear — your website, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, Yelp, Apple Maps, and dozens of directories you’ve never visited. When every source tells the same story, Google trusts the listing and shows it more often in map results. When the sources disagree, that trust drops, and the shop down the road with cleaner information starts showing up where you should be. And that’s just Google. A customer who calls a disconnected number from an old listing doesn’t try again — they call the next shop on the list.

    Where the mismatches hide

Most owners never created half the listings that mention their business. Directories copy from each other, old vendors set things up and moved on, and platforms auto-generate pages. The usual suspects:

    • A Facebook or Yelp page made years ago with an old number or address
    • Directory sites that copied your info from somewhere else — mistakes included
    • Your own website footer showing something different from your Google Business Profile
    • A move or a new phone number that got updated in some places but not all of them

    The afternoon fix

Pick one official version of your info: the exact business name, the exact address format, one phone number. Write it down. Then sweep the surfaces that matter most, in this order: your Google Business Profile, your website, Facebook, Yelp, Apple Maps, and Bing. Match everything to the official version, character for character. Claim any listing you don’t control and fix it. From then on, treat any change — new number, new location, even a new suite number — as a same-day sweep of that same list.

Not sure where your info disagrees? Our free Visibility Report checks how your business shows up across Google and the major listings and puts it on one page — plain English, no jargon, no sales pressure. It’s a fifteen-minute read that could be the reason the next customer’s call actually reaches you.
